What Is The Difference Between Schedule 40 And 80 Steel Pipe?

Sch40 steel pipe is a medium-wall carbon steel pipe defined by American standards (ASTM A53, ASME B36.10). It is the most widely used pipe grade due to its balanced strength, cost, and versatility.
Key features:

  • Pressure Rating: Designed for medium-low pressure applications (typically 1.0–4.0 MPa) like water supply, gas transmission, and general industrial piping.
  • Wall Thickness: The "Schedule 40" label does not refer to a single thickness. Instead, it's a standard that specifies different wall thicknesses for different pipe diameters.Has moderate wall thickness that balances pressure-bearing capacity and processing ease (welding, cutting, installation).
  • Common materials: Carbon steel (ASTM A53) or stainless steel (ASTM A312)

Sch80 steel pipe is a thick-wall carbon steel pipe under the same American standards (ASTM A53, ASME B36.10). It is optimized for high-pressure and harsh-service scenarios.Schedule 80 is a thicker, heavier-duty standard thickness designation for steel pipe.
Key features:

  • Pressure Rating: It has a significantly higher pressure rating than Schedule 40 of the same size.Used for high-pressure applications (typically 4.0–10.0 MPa) such as oil/gas pipelines, chemical processing, and high-pressure water systems.
  • Wall Thickness:For any given pipe diameter, a Schedule 80 pipe has a significantly thicker wall than a Schedule 40 pipe, providing higher tensile strength and resistance to internal pressure, corrosion, and external impact.
  • Reduced Internal Diameter (ID): Because the wall is thicker, the inside hole of the pipe is smaller for the same nominal pipe size (NPS). This is a critical factor to consider for fluid flow and volume.

3. What is the Difference Between Schedule and Thickness?

  • Thickness: This is a direct, physical measurement, typically in millimeters (mm) or inches (in). It's simply the distance between the inside and outside diameter of the pipe wall.
  • Schedule (SCH): It is a standardized classification system defined by the ASME B36.10M standard. A standardized wall thickness grade (e.g., 10, 40, 80) tied to Nominal Pipe Size (NPS). It is a classification to unify specifications, not a fixed dimension.
  • Core relationship: For the same NPS, higher Schedule = thicker wall; for the same Schedule, larger NPS = thicker wall.

For the same Nominal Pipe Size (NPS), Schedule 80 pipe is significantly thicker than Schedule 40.

Let's look at the numbers for common sizes to make it absolutely clear. All measurements are wall thickness in millimeters (mm).
Schedule 80 wall thickness is on average 35-42% thicker than schedule 40, and the larger the pipe diameter, the more pronounced the difference.
