Chemical Requirements of ASTM A795 Fire Protection Pipe
- The ASTM A795 steel material shall conform to the requirements as to chemical composition specified in the table on the right
- An analysis of two pipes from each lot of 500 lengths,or fraction thereof, may be made by the purchaser. The chemical composition thus determined shall conform to therequirements specified in the table on the right
- Chemical analysis methods, practices, and definitions must adhere to Test Methods, Practices, and Terminology A 751.

Test Requirements Of ASTM A795 Fire Protection Pipe
Hydrostatic Test Of ASTM A795 pipe
The hydrostatic test (hydrotest) is a mandatory pressure test to verify the pipe's ability to withstand internal pressure without leakage or structural failure.
Acceptance Criteria:
Zero leakage: No weeping, sweating, or pressure drop .
Exemptions: Pipes that pass the nondestructive electric test may be exempt from the hydrostatic test, as per the standard.
Nondestructive Electric Test Of ASTM A795 pipe
This test is a non-destructive method to detect surface or near-surface defects (e.g., cracks, seams, or discontinuities) in the pipe, typically using eddy current or ultrasonic testing. It can replace the hydrostatic test if specified.
Acceptance Criteria:
No significant defects (e.g., cracks, holes, or large inclusions) are allowed.
The test must be calibrated using reference standards (e.g., pipes with artificial defects) to ensure accuracy.
Flattening Test Of ASTM A795 pipe
Purpose: The flattening test evaluates the ductility and weld quality (for welded pipes) by compressing a pipe segment until its walls are flattened, checking for cracks or brittleness.
Sampling: 1 test per 500 pipes (or lot) for welded pipes .
Acceptance Criteria:
No cracks, splits, or breaks are allowed in the pipe body or weld (if welded) during or after flattening.
Minor surface irregularities (e.g., slight creases) that do not affect structural integrity are acceptable.
Coating Of ASTM A795 Fire Protection Pipe

- The weight of the zinc coating shall not be less than1.5 oz/ft 2 [0.46 kg/m2] .The weight of coating expressed in ounces per square foot or kilograms per square metre shall be calculated by dividing the total weight of zinc, inside plus outside, by total area, inside plus outside, of the surface coated.
- The ASTM A795 standard specifies a minimum coating thickness of 1.3 oz/ft2 (0.40 kg/m2).
- ASTM A795 requires that Test specimens for the determination of weight of coating shall be cut approximately 4 in. [100 mm] in length.
- ASTM A795 requires that If flattening tests are made on galvanized samples, any flaking or cracking of the galvanized coating shall not because for rejection.
- Protective Coating-If required by the purchaser, the pipe shall be cleaned of all foreign matter, dried, and given a protective coating such as oil, lacquer, enamel, etc., as agreed upon by the purchaser.
Product Marking Of ASTM A795 Fire Protection Pipe
- Each length of pipe shall be legibly marked by rolling, stamping, or stenciling to show the name or brand of the manufacturer, the kind of pipe, that is, continuous-welded, electric-resistance-welded A, electric-resistance-welded B,seamless A, or seamless B. Grade A or B for Type E or S pipe, the ASTM designation, the length, and the letters "NH" if not hydrostatically tested. Bundled pipe NPS 1 1 ⁄2 [DN 40] and smaller may have this information marked on a tag, securely attached to each bundle.
- When pipe sections are cut into shorter lengths by a subsequent processor for resale as material, the processor shall transfer complete identifying information to each unmarked cut length, or to metal tags securely attached to bundles of unmarked small diameter pipe. The same material designation shall be included with the information transferred and the processor's name, trademark, or brand shall be added.
- Bar Coding-In addition to the above requirements, bar coding is acceptable as a supplemental identification method. The purchaser may specify in the order a specific bar coding system to be used.
Correlation between STM A795 and UL and FM
The correlation between ASTM A795 fire-resistant pipes, UL (Underwriters Laboratories), and FM (FM Approvals) lies in their complementary roles in ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of fire protection piping systems.
- ASTM A795: A material standard developed by ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials) that specifies technical requirements for carbon steel pipes used in fire protection systems (e.g., chemical composition, mechanical properties, manufacturing processes, and testing methods). It defines the "basic quality" of the pipe itself.
- UL: A global safety certification organization that develops safety standards and conducts product certification to verify that products meet fire, electrical, or structural safety requirements.
- FM: A certification organization focused on property loss prevention (especially in fire and industrial safety). It develops standards for fire protection products and systems to ensure they perform reliably in fire emergencies.
Fire protection systems (e.g., sprinkler systems, standpipes) are critical for life and property safety. A pipe that meets only ASTM A795 (material standards) may still fail in actual use .UL and FM certifications fill this gap: They verify that the pipe, as a key component, can maintain performance in the entire lifecycle of the fire protection system (from installation to fire emergencies).
Since UL and FM standards explicitly reference ASTM A795 as the material benchmark, manufacturers must first produce pipes that meet ASTM A795, then pass UL/FM's additional tests to enter the market.
