Type S (seamless pipe)
Grade A 0.25B 0.95 0.05 0.045 0.4 0.4 0.4 0.15 0.08
Grade B 0.30C 1.2 0.05 0.045 0.4 0.4 0.4 0.15 0.08
Type E (electric-resistance-welded)
Grade A 0.25B 0.95 0.05 0.045 0.4 0.4 0.4 0.15 0.08
Grade B 0.30C 1.2 0.05 0.045 0.4 0.4 0.4 0.15 0.08
Type F (furnace-welded pipe)
Grades A and B 0.30B 1.2 0.05 0.045 0.4 0.4 0.4 0.15 0.08
  • A The total composition for these five elements shall not exceed 1.00 %.
  • B For each reduction of 0.01 % below the specified carbon maximum, an increase of 0.06 % manganese above the specified maximum will be permitted up to a maximum of 1.35 %.
  • C For each reduction of 0.01 % below the specified carbon maximum, an increase of 0.06 % manganese above the specified maximum will be permitted up to a maximum of 1.65 %.

Mechanical Properties Requirements of ASTM A53 Pipe

The mechanical properties requirements for ASTM A53 pipes are standardized across seamless (Type F) and welded (Type E, ERW) types, with key differences between Grade A and Grade B.

  • Type E, Electric-Resistance-Welded Pipe-Pipe produced in single lengths, or in multiple lengths from coiled skelp and subsequently cut into individual lengths, having a longitudinal butt joint wherein coalescence is produced by the heat obtained from resistance of the pipe to the flow of electric current in a circuit of which the pipe is a part, and by the application of pressure.
  • Type S, Seamless Pipe-Pipe made without a welded seam. It is manufactured by hot working steel and, if necessary, by subsequently cold finishing the hot-worked tubular product to produce the desired shape, dimensions, and properties.
  • Type F, Furnace-Butt-Welded Pipe, Continuous Welded Pipe-Pipe produced in multiple lengths from coiled skelp and subsequently cut into individual lengths, having its longitudinal butt joint forge welded by the mechanical pressure developed in rolling the hot-formed skelp through a set of round pass welding rolls.

End Finish Of ASTM A53 Pipe

  • Pipes with diameters less than 0.500 inches and STD / XS pipes with plain or beveled ends
  • Pipe schedules greater than 0.500 inches in diameter and XXS: Ends are squared cut and simple.
  • Thread protection is required for pipes larger than 4 inches if they are supplied with threaded ends.
