1. Austenitic :The most widely used family (including the 300 series like Grade 304 and 316).

2. Ferritic :Contains high chromium but low carbon (e.g., Grade 430).

3. Martensitic :Similar to ferritic but with higher carbon content (e.g., Grade 410 and 420).
- Characteristics: Magnetic and can be hardened by heat treatment to achieve high strength and wear resistance.
- Common Uses: Cutlery (knives), surgical instruments, and fasteners.
4. Duplex :A hybrid structure consisting of approximately 50% austenitic and 50% ferritic (e.g., Grade 2205).
- Characteristics: Higher strength and superior resistance to localized corrosion (pitting and crevice) compared to standard austenitic steels.
- Common Uses: Desalination plants, oil & gas industry, and marine environments.
