Scaffolding should be erected by at least two people. Firstly, it is necessary to determine the height, length, and load-bearing requirements of the scaffold. Next, choose components such as scaffolding tubes, couplers , and scaffolding boards that are of good quality, have no obvious damage or deformation. Then ensure that the installation area is free of any obstacles and debris, and that the ground is stable and flat.
Foundation Setup
For standard ground-based scaffolding, start by laying down base plates. These distribute the weight of the scaffolding evenly across the ground. If the soil is unstable, pour a small concrete slab or use adjustable base jacks to level the structure. For higher scaffolding, a concrete foundation needs to be poured, and reinforcement bars can be added to enhance the bearing capacity.
Erecting the Frame
Position the Uprights: According to the marked position of the vertical columns (standard), evenly separate them, usually 1.5-2.5 meters apart.Install the Uprights: Insert the uprights into the base plates or attach them to the building as per the design. Use a spirit level to ensure they are completely vertical and temporarily support them to prevent collapse.Add Horizontal Members: Connect horizontal members (ledgers) to the uprights at regular intervals, forming the basic framework. These should be tightly coupled, usually using spigot and socket joints or bolted connections, to create a rigid structure.
Reinforcement and Bracing
Diagonal Bracing: Install diagonal braces to add stability to the scaffolding. These braces counteract lateral forces, such as wind loads. They should be fixed at angles between 35° - 55° to the horizontal and vertical members, forming a triangulated, stable pattern across the structure.Tie-ins: For taller scaffolding or in areas prone to high winds, incorporate tie-ins to the building structure at regular intervals.
Laying scaffold boards
Choose platforms that are wide enough for safe work operations, typically at least 600mm. Lay the platforms across the horizontal members, ensuring they are level. Fasten them firmly in place using clips, bolts, or other appropriate fasteners to prevent movement.
Safety Features Installation
Guardrails:Install guardrails around the perimeter of the scaffolding at a height of around 1 - 1.2 meters above the working platform. Toeboards: Fit toeboards along the edge of the platform, typically 150 - 200mm high, to prevent tools, materials, or debris from falling off.Safety Nets: Hang a safety net under the scaffold to catch any falling objects or personnel in case of an accident.
Inspection and Testing
Check for proper alignment of all components, tightness of connections, and integrity of the safety features.Perform load testing before allowing workers to use scaffolding
