SSAW pipes are large-diameter steel pipes manufactured by spirally (helically) forming hot-rolled steel coils or strips into a tubular shape, followed by welding the continuous seam using the submerged arc welding (SAW) process. The weld arc is submerged under a layer of granular flux, shielding the molten metal from oxidation.

Submerged Arc Welding (SAW):
Internal Welding First: The inner weld is performed using a submerged arc welding machine with a single or tandem wire system.A flux layer covers the arc to prevent atmospheric contamination.The welding head moves along the spiral seam as the pipe rotates.
External Welding: After internal welding, the outer weld is performed similarly.Multiple passes may be used for thicker pipes.
Flux Recovery: Excess flux is collected, recycled, and reused.

Key Characteristics of SSAW Pipes
- Spiral Weld Seam: The most distinctive feature is the helical weld seam that runs along the length of the pipe. This spiral design distributes stress more evenly compared to longitudinal seams, enhancing the pipe's resistance to external pressure (e.g., from soil in buried applications).
- Diameter Flexibility: SSAW pipes can be produced in a wide range of diameters, typically from 200mm (8 inches) up to 3000mm (120 inches), making them suitable for large-scale projects.
