What Is The Difference Between Carbon Steel Pipe And Galvanized Steel Pipe?

1.Material Composition

Carbon steel has a total alloy content of less than 2%.The focus of carbon steel is to fine tune the carbon and alloy content according to specific properties.

Galvanized steel has a total alloy content of 10-30%.The focus of galvanized steel is on the protection provided by the galvanized layer

2.Manufacturing Proces

Carbon steel pipe is made by piercing steel ingots or solid round steel to form capillaries, and then hot rolling, cold rolling, and cold drawing

Galvanized steel pipes are manufactured through hot-dip galvanizing process, which involves immersing the steel pipe in a high-temperature molten zinc bath to allow zinc to adhere to the surface of the steel pipe, forming a uniform and durable galvanized layer.

3.Characteristics

Carbon steel pipes are renowned for their excellent mechanical and processing properties, which make them easy to cut, shape, and weld to meet various design and construction requirements. But it requires appropriate protection or surface treatment to prevent corrosion in corrosive environments.

Galvanized steel pipes have the advantages of corrosion resistance and rust prevention due to the galvanized layer. In addition, the galvanized layer can improve the wear resistance and aesthetics of the pipeline to a certain extent.

 4.Product Surface

Usually has a dark gray or black appearance, depending on the surface finish and any oxidation that may occur. If it is an unoxidized carbon steel pipe, it has the metallic luster characteristics of steel.

Due to the galvanized layer, it has a shiny silver gray appearance. The smooth and reflective surface of zinc makes the pipes look more visually appealing, which gives them an aesthetic effect in architecture.

5.Applications

Commonly used in building frames, bridge support structures, as well as high-temperature and high-pressure environments such as boilers and steam pipelines. It is also used in pipelines for transporting fluids or gases, but in these pipelines, corrosion is not the main issue, or the pipeline will be protected from corrosive elements by other means such as painting or using protective coatings.

Widely used in plumbing systems, especially for water supply lines, both indoors and outdoors. It is suitable for use in damp and corrosive places such as petrochemical, chemical, shipbuilding, and marine development industries. It is also used in some construction and structural applications where corrosion resistance is required.
